  1. We have uncovered a program bug that we believe
  2. is responsible for the unexplainable problems
  3. people have been having with DoubleSpace.  The
  4. bug appears when a compressed drive is severely
  5. fragmented.  At such times, an apparently
  6. successful file write actually writes garbage
  7. data.  The bug has been demonstrated on several
  8. different hardware configuations, both with
  9. and without auxiliary programs like SMARTDrive
  10. and Delete Sentry.  Microsoft DOS development
  11. has confirmed the bug.  Drive fragmentation will
  12. occur after heavy use or when the drive becomes
  13. full.  Remember, if your DoubleSpace estimated
  14. compression ratio is set higher that the actual
  15. then the free space reported by DOS is in accurate
  16. and includes "phantom" free space that does not 
  17. exist.  Likewise, if you are using Delete Sentry
  18. DOS will report the waste basket directory as
  19. being free space, when in fact it is not.  These
  20. factors make it possible that you are running out 
  21. of space and becoming fragmented without knowing
  22. it.

  24. Blossom Software has released a utility called
  25. DoubleCheck that tests the fragmentation and
  26. sanity of a compressed drive.  DoubleCheck can
  27. be run from DOS (in the commercial version only)
  28. or in the background from Windows.  It gives 
  29. complete information about the status of a drive,
  30. warning of potential trouble before it happens.  
  31. If the bug strikes,it can help find the damaged 
  32. files.  The demo version in this package will 
  33. report if your DoubleSpace drives are safe to use 
  34. and if file corruption has occured but does not 
  35. provide details available with the commercial 
  36. product.  In addition to the checking that the 
  37. demo version does the commercial product will 
  38. do the following:

  40. *  It tells you how much disk space is really available
  41.   Unlike DIR, CHKDSK, and the Program Manager, DoubleCheck 
  42.   gives accurate and complete information
  43.  
  44. *  It tells you how much space is occupied by Sentry 
  45. "deleted" files. 
  46.   When the Delete Sentry is active, deleted files are
  47.   saved in a wastebasket for later  recovery.  Your 
  48.   disk can fill up without you even  knowing it.

  50. *  It helps you recover damaged files
  51.   In certain situations, DoubleSpace and other programs 
  52.   can damage files.  DoubleCheck scans your disk looking 
  53.   for signs of trouble.

  55. *  It helps you protect your data
  56.   DoubleCheck can detect situations known to cause file 
  57.   damage and warn you before they occur.
